Future Weavers: remote participatory research with 100 young people to find out how they want to shape future health research

Commissioned by Wellcome Trust | With SHIft and beatfreeks | Team: Sadhbh Doherty, Simeon | My role: Project Lead | 2020-2021

Challenge

Young people deserve to have a say in the big issues that are shaping our world. With a particular focus on the Wellcome Trust’s three global health challenges (mental health, climate and health and infectious diseases), this project explored the role young people can play in health and science research and outlined recommendations for researchers looking to involve young people in their work.

The whole project was conducted remotely due to it happening in 2020-21 during Covid.

Process

  • Recruiting and training a team of a team of 6 young researchers in participatory and qualitative research.

  • Supporting them to lead research: shaping research questions, conducting interviews, research ethics, synthesis and report writing.

  • Organising online remote research with a diverse and representattive sample of 100 young peoople aged 16-25 as well as professional researchers.

  • Supporting the young co-leads to present their findings to professional health and science researchers.

“I think being young people involved in research has really impacted how the research itself was conducted. Because we were kind of more aware of what issues affect young people and what young people want to see prioritised. And because of that, we added additional questions on how underrepresented groups access research for example.
